It is with great pleasure that Neighbourhood Dance Works brings you an evening of New Dance on Friday April 23 and Saturday April 24 at the Historic LSPU Hall. This is the first dance event at the Hall since renovations began over a year ago. We are delighted to see the hall come to life once again with the spirit of dance in our exciting Main Stage Series.
This year's Main Stage Series captures the true vision of our organization: to bring nationally acclaimed dance artists to St John's, to develop partnerships with our CanDance colleagues, to nurture an ongoing relationship with long time artistic mentors and to present works by local senior and emerging artists.
"Lost and Found is a compelling dance portrait. It is not so much originality of theme that makes Fujiwara eminently watchable, but her careful construction of the visual/physical manifestation".Paula Citron - The Dance Current, April 13, 2010.
We are thrilled Denise is returning to St John's with her new solo work Lost and Found. The piece was commissioned by the CanDance Network Creation Fund and is a co-production with Dance Works (Toronto), Neighbourhood Dance Works (St John's), Live Art Dance Productions (Halifax), and Peterborough New Dance.
Welcome back Denise!
Jo Leslie's return to St John's is particularly fitting because this year we are celebrating 20 years of the Festival of New Dance (Sept 2010). Jo was one of the early performers of the festival and her artistic influence has had a lasting effect on our community.
Jo taught in St John's in the 1980s and 90s and was highly instrumental in bringing New Dance to the province.
Jo is a leading Canadian artist in movement for the stage. Her new work, A Propos of Nothingwill be performed by St John's very own charismatic Louise Moyes!
Andrea Tucker is a dancer, teacher and emerging choreographer living in St.John's. She graduated from the School of Toronto Dance Theatre and in August 2008 she attended SEEDS (Somatic Experiments in Earth, Dance, + Science) at Earthdance in Plainfield, Massachusetts.
Her interest in improvisational has guided her to her first choreographic process; a duet with Mark Bath and Tammy McLeod.
Congratulations on your choreographic depute with NDW!

Landmarked is a site-specific interdisciplinary project that honors the past, is alive in the present and awakens the senses. Landmarked addresses the value of urban space by looking at personal, shared or historical associations to the geography of the city while exploring the interdependence of people and place.
Following a map as a guide for an interactive journey through downtown St.John's, this excursion could take the entire afternoon, or could take place at times of convenience over the course of the weekend.
Neighbourhood Dance Works is delighted to announce our upcoming 2010 season and hope you will join us in the months to come. This year marks our 20th Anniversary of the Festival of New Dance and to celebrate we are featuring an exciting line-up of main stage performances, community outreach, professional development workshops, a creation based collaboration, and community engagements throughout the year.
To mark this special occasion we have extended the dates for the festival allowing us more opportunities to present contemporary dance from across the country. Check out our line up below, we think you will be as equally delighted as we are!
Neighbourhood Dance Works has had an illustrious history and our programs have made a substantial impact on the cultural life of this province. We are truly grateful to everyone who has contributed to our growth and recognize that without the dedication of past and present artistic leaders, we would not be here today.
We look forward to seeing you at our shows, and to toast 20 years of the Festival of New Dance!
From July 21st - 26th, 2009 St John's was alive with contemporary dance. Our venues covered every corner of the downtown and our shows drew out fantastic crowds to see some of Canada's most compelling dance works. Our artists came from near and far, including St John's NL, Vancouver BC and points in between.
