What is Contact Improv?

Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dynamic and spontaneous movement practice that explores weight-sharing, balance, and momentum through physical connection with others. Dancers engage in fluid, unscripted interactions, using touch, gravity, and counterbalance to guide their movements.

Rooted in contemporary dance, CI allows for playfulness, creativity, and deep listening between partners. Movements can range from gentle and meditative to athletic and energetic, adapting to each dancer’s comfort and abilities. No prior experience is needed—just an openness to explore movement in a supportive environment.

Our Commitment to a Safe and Inclusive Space

Neighbourhood Dance Works (NDW) is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants. We welcome dancers of all identities, backgrounds, and experience levels, and we ask everyone to contribute to a space built on mutual care, consent, and respect.

While Contact Improv is built on connection, we encourage everyone to:

  • Be mindful of your partner’s comfort and safety. Pay attention to non-verbal cues and ask if unsure.

  • Respect personal boundaries. You are never obligated to dance with anyone.

  • Communicate clearly. If you need a break or experience discomfort, let your partner know.

  • Help maintain a safer space. If you witness or experience inappropriate behavior, please reach out to us.

If you have any concerns or questions, please contact us at director@neighbourhooddanceworks.com.
