What Is Dance Improvisation?
Dance improvisation is a movement practice rooted in responsiveness, awareness, and play. Participants explore structure and spontaneity through solo, partnered, and group movement—drawing from tools such as Contact Improvisation, spatial awareness, rhythm, and attention.
The monthly Live Music Session adds another layer of listening, inviting dancers and musicians into a shared improvisational dialogue where movement and sound co-evolve in real time. Serving as a training ground and networking space for our Impulse Series.
No prior experience is required—just curiosity and respect for the shared space.
Our Commitment to a Safer, Inclusive Space
Neighbourhood Dance Works (NDW) is committed to cultivating a safer, inclusive, and respectful environment. We welcome participants of all identities, backgrounds, and experience levels, and we ask everyone to help uphold a space grounded in consent, care, and mutual respect.
As part of this shared practice, we encourage everyone to:
Be attentive to comfort and safety, including verbal and non-verbal cues
Respect personal boundaries—participation is always a choice
Communicate clearly and take breaks when needed
Reach out to the facilitator or NDW staff if you witness or experience inappropriate behaviour
