ORGANIZING AND GROWING NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR'S DANCE SINCE 1981

OUR LATEST

WHO WE ARE

Neighbourhood Dance Works (NDW) is Newfoundland and Labrador’s primary source of dance. We are dance presenters, dedicated to creating inclusive and welcoming spaces that gather together dance practitioners, audiences and supporters.

A respected leader in the cultural milieu, we spearhead initiatives that put NL on the National stage, helping showcase the diversity of our dance community. NDW is proud to be on the leading edge of Canadian arts presentation, and proud to be the organizers of the Festival of New Dance.

WHAT WE DO

NDW has been dedicated to the development of a vibrant dance community and the advancement of emerging and mature choreographers. We strive to reflect the diversity of our local, regional and national communities, and actively embrace the values of equity, inclusion, right relations and resilience.

Through presentation, workshops, residencies, and more, we aim to foster exploration, risk-taking and creative-courage, and believe that dance practices can help express the portrayal of diverse realities, actively embracing the values of equity, inclusion, right relations and resilience.

OUR HISTORY

Neighbourhood Dance Works was founded in 1981 as a performance collective dedicated to creating innovative new dance works in St. John’s. As the organization developed, a performance series was established (Festival of New Dance), which showcases local talent, as well as work by leading Canadian dancers, making NDW the primary presenter of dance in the province.

We recognize the privileges and inheritances of our history and work to celebrate more expansive understandings of the practices of dance and their communities. Throughout its history NDW’s activities have grown to include artist residencies, workshops and seminars, as well as presenting dance performance in a wide variety of venues to an expanding audience. Neighbourhood Dance Works has become a nationally recognized presenter of contemporary dance and has showcased internationally established artists alongside emerging choreographers and dancers, advancing the careers of many Newfoundland dance artists.
