What Is It

The Impulse Series is a new interdisciplinary performance series pilot presented in partnership by The Rooms, Sound Arts Initiatives, and Neighbourhood Dance Works.

The series brings together local dancers and musicians to create spontaneous, real-time compositions in an intimate, low-tech performance setting. Each presentation features a small mixed ensemble improvising together—without predetermined choreography or musical scores—and is followed by a short audience reflection period.

Public presentation evenings will take place at The Rooms Theatre

between March and June 2026.

Selection Process

Performing Artists are selected through an open and transparent curation process led by the programming team. Selection may be for one or more monthly presentation evenings and is based on:

  • Responsiveness to improvisation

  • Ability to collaborate within an ensemble

  • Creativity, risk-taking, and engagement

  • Suitability for an intimate performance format

Open Studio

Saturday, February 7, 2026 | 2–4 PM The Rooms Theatre, St. John’s

The Open Studio is the primary entry point for artists interested in participating in the pilot. It replaces a traditional audition with an in-person, exploratory gathering.

During the session, artists will:

  • Meet the programming team (Julia Carr – Neighbourhood Dance Works, Kathy Clark-Wherry, & Michelle LaCour – Sound Arts Initiatives)

  • Take part in improvisation games, prompts, and ensemble exercises

  • Explore collaboration between movement and sound

  • Express interest in being considered for paid performance opportunities

  • Optionally share ideas or creative approaches for group exploration

Participation is free and open to dancers and musicians aged 17+.

Prior professional experience is welcomed but is not a requirement.
